Descripteurs : AK2 - EMG

Electrical stimulation of phrenic nerves and detection of motor responses of the crural (esophageal electrodes) and costal (thoracic surface electrodes) parts of each hemidiaphragm can be relatively easy brought into play. The normal values of phrenic conduction times and the amplitudes of motor responses in the two derivations are determined in 104 adults and 11 infants. This technique also allows to detect accurately the signs of disorders of the phrenic nerve (lengthening of conduction times : lowering of motor response) and to evaluate their importance. The results obtained by means of this technique in 31 cases (23 adults, 8 infants) of unilateral anomalies of the diaphragm are described.
