A technique for recording EMG activity from specific segments of multifidus has been developed based on recent morphological studies. In the present study bilateral EMG recordings of the lower four lumbar segments of multifidus were obtained during various movements of the trunk in the prone, standing and sitting positions in a group of seventeen normal subjects. The possibility of independent activity of the various segments of the muscle has been studied. Patterns of muscular activity during various movements of the trunk were described. A possible clinical application of the technique of specific lumbar segment EMG of multifidus has also been discussed.
