The reliability of the pallesthesiometer, a simple and inexpensive device which measures the vibratory perception threshold, was assessed in 20 subjects, with conditions which can produce peripheral neuropathy, and 50 normal controls. The data suggest the device's objectivity to be high, although results are dependent upon a subjective response from the patient. The fact that results are reproducible suggests the device may be useful as a diagnostic aid as well as valuable in identifying patients at risk for secondary complications associated with peripheral neuropathy.
