Forty-eight knees, in which a Walldius hinge prosthesis had been inserted, were reviewed. Follow-up ranged between 9 and 158 months (mean : 61 months, ie. 5 years 1 month). A 100 point rating system was used for the pre- and postoperative assessment. An average improvement from 38 points preoperatively to 86.5 points postoperatively was observed. This positive evolution must for the greater part be attributed to a near complete pain relief and increased stability. Of all arthroplasties performed, 40 (83%) can be considered a success. A permanent complications were encountered in 8 (17%) of the arthroplasties : loosening of the prosthesis (2), deep infection (4), cardiac failure (1) and fracture of the bone near the prosthesis (4).
