Descripteurs : EB3 - AMPUTATION DU MEMBRE INFERIEUR

Techniques for the amputation of the lower extremities - Based on experience gained in treating more than 3.000 amputations since 1950, details regarding the techniques used in the region of the lower limb are presented. Myoplastic and osteoplastic operational procedures are described in detail, as is myodesis. Attention is drawn to the advantages of myoplastic reshaping of the stump by the production of antagonistic muscle slings that allow better development of the strength of the remaining stump correction, normalization of the blood circulation, and the elimination of painful oxygen deficiencies. Exarticulation of the knee-joint is beneficial in the case of vascular patients. In patients with tarsal stumps, osteoplastic operational procedures ensure a good terminal load. The aim of every amputation is as follows : the stumpf should be free of pain, with strong muscular power and a good blood circulation, and its form should be as even as possible with a smooth surface, thus eventually permitting full weight-bearing and ensuring that the stump can be fitted with modern contact prostheses.
