Review of the application of differents methods of recording, with an emphasis on the observations showing effect different bandpass filtering. Several clinical cases are presented. In particular abnormalities in postconcussional cases are described. Short latency SEPs from the posterior surface of the neck were first recorded by Liberson and Kim (1963). Inthe following time their findings were confirmed and extended by Matthews et al. (1974). Cracco and Cracco (1976), El-Negamy and Sedgwick (1978, 1979), Halliday (1978), Hume and Cant (1978), Abbruzzese et al. (1979), Symon et al. (1979), Small et al. (1980) Anizka and Cracco (1980), Chiappa et al. (1980), Cracco et al. (1980), Desmedt and Cheron (1980a), Eisen and Odusote (1980), Ganes (1980), Mauguière and Courjon (1981). However, the clinical application of this method was limited because of the uncertainty about the origin of the different short latency SEP components. Only in 1980 the studies of Desmedt and Cheron and Anizka and Cracco tried to determine the nature of spinal generators The second limitation of clinical application was a lack of standardization of recording techniques. Scalp-ear, scalp-noncephalic reference and cervical spine-scalp leads application of these different methods results in quite different recordings. Also different bandpass filtering leads to different results.
