The incidence of low back pain was given special consideration and explored in relation to the frequency of performing a 'back-flip' during normal training. Twenty-nine gymnasts were interviewed about present and past areas of injury. The anatomical locations of injury were similar to previous reports but it was disturbing to find the low back was the most frequently reported problematic area. Twenty one of these subjects completed a four-week diary of how often they performed a back-flip. It was found that the average number of back flips performed per week dependent on an individual's training plan and had no statistically significant relationship to the incidence of back pain. The results demonstrated significant differences between the back pain and non-back-pain group with respect to age, weight and the number of years performing gymnastics.
