This review article presents an overview of upper limb prostheses including the history and development of myoelectric prostheses. We have concentrated on the aspects of applications of myoelectric prostheses from the clinicians' perspective rather than the technical and engineering aspects. The current trends and views we present should assist clinicians in deciding whether, and when to prescribe myoelectric prostheses, what type should be prescribed, and with what likelihood of success.
