Neuroprosthese are a means for restoration of functions like standing/walking or grasping, lost as a sequel to spinal cord injury. So far, however, their widespread acceptance was hampered by difficult handling and limited functional benefit. The Freehand system is the first implantable neuroprosthesis from which tetraplegics with missing or weak grasp and hold function of thet hand do benefit. The combination of electrical stimulation and operative tendon transfers, forms a concept for long term restoration of the grasp function. An extensive and multifaceted rehabilitation program is an indispensable requirement for application of the system. On successful completion, the patient is able to use the system for activities of daily living, independently without the need for special additional aids.
