Changes in body cell after severe head trauma can extend into the rehabilitation period (and not just throughout the acute phase post-injury) and this should be considered in embarking on rehabilitation treatment. In addition, very different conclusions may be drawn from an assessment made using anthropometric and body composition data. Further studies are warranted to develop safe therapies to prevent, reduce and / or reverse these changes including nutritional supplemention to meet energy, substrate utilization and physical therapy. Such studies may have important pathophysiological and clinical implications in the rehabilitation of head injured children.
