A new externally powered, myoelectrically controlled partial-hand prosthesis mechanism and prosthetic interface are described. There is a need for such a device in the fitting of amputees with a loss of all digits or more proximal to the level of the metacarpals. In addition, preservation of the wrist motion for positioning of the hand mechanism is very important if maximum function and cosmesis are to be achieved. An initial prototype transmetacarpal hand mechanism and its associated electronics and a prosthetic interface have been developed.
