Physiotherapists have been at the forefront of the chronic pain management movement, in which increased activity and improved function are important features. By incorporating psychological principles into their clinical practice they have been able to make significant contributions to helping chronic pain patients make changes where previously this has not been possible. This article describes some principles and practical strategies that can be applied by any physiotherapist and taught to patients to help them improve their function despite pain.
