The 6-minute walk test (MWT) and other such tests have been used widely in clinical and research settings to measure the aerobic functional capacity and endurance of patients with heart and lung disease. This review of the literature was performed to determine the extent of use of the 6-MWT and other MWTs in published research and to document relevant findings. The literature provides support for the reliability, validity, and responsiveness of the 6-MWT for a wide spectrum of individuals. However, parameters for its implementation vary considerably in different settings.
