This article provides an update about the epidemiology of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA), the progress made in determining genetic susceptibility, and the current status of the classification of the chronic inflammatory arthritides of childhood. It explores some unique clinical features and complications of JRA including growth failure, osteoporosis and macrophage activation syndrome, and recent data relating to outcome and prognosis. Current pharmacologic therapy is also reviewed.
