Barriers to the implantation of evidence-based practice in orthotics and prosthetics

Evidence-based practice entails a process of ensuring that current patient care is influenced by the findings of published literature. Its success seems to be contingent on the "usefulness" of the emerging knowledge, which is essentially a product of its relevance, validity, and the ease with which it is accessed. Usefulness is enhanced when information is translated into secondary knowledge sources and broadly disseminated. Examples of such secondary knowledge sources are found throughout health care and include such genres as Patient-Oriented Evidence that Matters, Tips from Other Journals, and Critically Appraised Topics. Although traditional secondary knowledge sources exist within orthotics and prosthetics, there is a need for more "useful" information to be conveyed in more rapid, accessible formats
