The International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF)
represents a general framework for concepts of health and disability. The number
of patients undergoing Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is increasing worldwide.
Capturing the different health-related ICF domains in this increasing number of
patients with TKA requires clinicians and researchers to be familiar with the
tools that can be used in daily clinical practice to capture these health-related
domains. This paper aimed to review the outcome measures related to the different
ICF domains in patients with TKA and to review the psychometric properties of
these outcome measures. An electronic search for relevant articles using MEDLINE
and CINHAL databases up to March 2014 was performed. In addition to the
electronic search, the articles retrieved were searched manually for relevant
studies. Impairment-based outcome measures important to patients with TKA
included measures of knee pain intensity, knee joint mobility, and muscle
performance. Outcome measures capturing activity limitation in patients with TKA
included both self-reported and performance-based measures as each capture a
different aspect of the activity limitation construct. The disability component
of the late life function and disability instrument can be used to quantify
participation restriction patients with TKA. Clinicians and researchers are
encouraged to measure the different health-related domains in patients with TKA
using the outcome measures presented in this review.
